"Contemporary Art in Traditional Museums" is an annual international arts festival with the basic premise of promoting the convergence of traditional culture and contemporary art. The festival is renowned for its unusual art projects and many people remember the "Choir of St. Petersburg complainers" who served in different parts of the city a fun song with the complaints of its citizens. During the history of the festival "Contemporary Art in Traditional Museums" has implemented about 150 projects in more than 50 museums throughout St. Petersburg.

In 2011, the Foundation "Pro Arte" will prepare a special anniversary program of the festival. Young artists from the St. Petersburg group "Soap" will bring to the Museum of Hygiene several quintals of soap to create installations, and artist Nicholas Polissky, within the Artillery Museum, will create a bizarre military parade of wooden toy tanks and guns surrounded by a brood of lurid kids. In addition, another 10 original projects and a surprise at the festival opening 17th September, 12.00 noon in the fortress.

'Close Up Vallarta'

An international video creation show. The Festival is an open exhibition where material ranging from video art to experimental video will be presented, covering everything related to art made in video.
It constitutes an interrelation and promotion space that enables us to come closer to visual experimentation.

'Close Up Villarta' offers the chance to present new video work of emerging or established artists and its focus is to present art made in video in spaces other than museums and galleries, and to reach more spectators.

The curatorial proposal is based on liberating video-art from the rigid and pre-established discourse that has dominated the genre. The 'Close Up' project emulates the constant activity of the eye and our perception, and arises from the modern trend to visualize our existence.

The work of Geoff Parr is a celebration of the fusion between contemporary fashion design and painting as

Embargo - New Art from Serbia

Curated by Neil Morris and Mike Walton
at 68 Hope Street, JMU School of Art & Design

30th October - 17th November 2006
Open Monday to Thursday 10.00 -16.00
Friday 10.00 -14.00
Admission Free

Private View 16.00 Monday 30th October

Artists:
Milan Hrnjazovic, Boris Kandolf, Atila Kapitajn, Nenad Kostic, Aleksandra Zdravkovic.
Artists in Residence:
Aleksandar Andric, Boris Kandolf, Andy Magee.

Embargo is an exhibition of the work of five artists from regions throughout Serbia and is part of an ongoing

exchange programme with artists based in North West England, organised by Crazy Goat Art Promotions and
Eight Days a Week, Liverpool Cologne Exchange.

The inclusion of this work in the Biennial is an opportunity for artists from culturally diverse backgrounds to

exhibit in an international context in the aftermath of conflict in the region. It is still quite difficult for

artists from
Serbia to travel and exhibit in Western Europe, due to sanctions and travel restrictions and therefore this is an

ideal opportunity to transcend imposed barriers, which have often resulted in alienation and exclusion.

The exhibition displays a range of media, made by a broad variety of artists. It includes sound and video

installation, mixed media work in painting / printmaking and graphics and explores diverse issues, made in a range

of styles and genres, revealing that artists from Eastern Europe have been influenced by many areas of research and

lines of enquiry, contrary to much preconceived opinion in western culture The exhibition is a catalyst for the

exchange of ideas, concepts and approaches between artists from different parts of Europe and will hopefully lead

to further developments in the context of cross cultural collaboration.

Runs until November 17th 2006
